Investing Basics for Beginners

How compounding, risk and time horizon fit together before you put money anywhere.

Common investment avenues include mutual funds, fixed deposits, direct equity, bonds and government-backed savings schemes. Each differs in risk, liquidity (how quickly money can be taken out), tax treatment and minimum holding period.

Compounding is what makes time so important. Returns that are earned are added to the original amount and begin to earn returns of their own. The longer money stays invested, the more this effect builds, which is why the time horizon, meaning how long the money will be left alone, is one of the first things worth deciding.

Risk and return are linked. Options that can grow more over time usually also carry a greater chance of losses along the way, while steadier options usually grow more slowly. Spreading money across different kinds of assets is a widely discussed way of managing this. These are general principles, not personal advice.

A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) lets a person invest a fixed amount into a mutual fund at regular intervals. The SIP Calculator on this site shows an illustrative projection for different amounts and periods.

Market-linked investments carry risk, and past performance does not predict future results. A SEBI-registered investment adviser can give suggestions that fit an individual. Dhimson Cover shares general information only and does not sell, arrange, compare or recommend any investment.
