Common Financial Scams To Recognise

Patterns used in frequent scams, and how to pause before acting.

Scams work by creating trust and pressure quickly, so that a person acts before thinking. The stories change, but the patterns repeat.

One common pattern is the promise of a fixed, unusually high return with little or no chance of loss. Genuine investments carry risk, and returns cannot be promised in advance. Be careful with schemes that rely on recruiting other people, on urgency such as "only today", or on screenshots of other people's profits.

Another is impersonation. Callers or messages claim to be from a bank, an insurer, the tax department, a courier or the police, and ask for an OTP, a PIN or card details, or ask you to install a screen-sharing app. A genuine institution does not ask for your OTP or PIN.

Fake investment groups and apps, tips sent through messaging apps, and unregistered advisers are also frequent. Regulated activities such as investment advice, insurance and lending are carried out by entities registered with the relevant regulator (SEBI, IRDAI or RBI), and registration can be checked on the regulator's own website.

Loan and insurance scams often ask for an upfront fee to release a loan, offer a refund on a "dormant" policy, or send a link to "update KYC". Treat any request for money before a service is delivered, and any unexpected link, with suspicion.

If something feels rushed, pause. Do not share OTPs, PINs or passwords, check by calling the institution on its official number, and do not click links in unexpected messages. Fraud can be reported on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or through the 1930 helpline, and reporting quickly improves the chance of stopping a transfer.

Key points

  • Scams create urgency and trust before you have time to think
  • Returns cannot be promised in advance, so fixed high returns with no chance of loss are a warning sign
  • A genuine institution never asks for your OTP or PIN
  • Registration with SEBI, IRDAI or RBI can be checked on the regulator's website
  • Pause, verify by an official number, and report quickly at cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930
