Insurance Basics, Explained Simply

What a policy actually promises, and the terms worth understanding before you read one.

Insurance is an agreement. You pay a premium, and the insurer promises to pay for a loss that the policy covers, up to an agreed limit. The idea is to share risk: many people each pay a small amount so that the few who suffer a large loss can be paid.

Every policy rests on a few terms. The premium is what you pay. The sum insured is the most the insurer will pay. The policy term is how long cover lasts. The deductible, or excess, is the part of a loss you bear yourself. Exclusions are the things that are not covered, and waiting periods can delay cover for certain events.

Policies differ by what they protect. Life insurance pays on death or other listed events. Health insurance pays medical costs. Motor insurance covers a vehicle and liability to other people. Home insurance covers a building and its contents. Each of these has its own article in Learn.

The policy document, not an advertisement or a conversation, sets out what is covered. Read the schedule, the exclusions and the claim steps, and ask the insurer in writing if anything is unclear. Dhimson Cover provides general information only. We do not sell, arrange, compare or recommend any policy. For advice about your own circumstances, speak to a suitably licensed professional.
